BTEC Music Performance

If you are looking to become a cutting-edge music performer, then this course is for you. This course will provide you with access to some of the leading products and artists within the industry. We want to develop the student’s skills and experiences to get the gig. The gig might be the job, the session, the commission, the deal or the tour.

You will receive one free instrumental lesson a week. At Cowley Sixth Form College, we aim to ensure that you gain the experience and develop the skills to be able to go wherever your work takes you.

Why study Music Performance?

The course is practical and links directly to current practice in the music industry.

This course provides excellent preparation for further study in Music and a career in the music industry.

Develop your practical skills, music theory knowledge, music industry knowledge and technical skills.

Students have access to a wide range of musical instruments.

To study at Cowley Sixth Form College, you must have achieved a minimum of five GCSEs or equivalent, graded 9 – 4, across four separate subjects, including GCSE Mathematics and English Language.

It is essential that a student can demonstrate proficient performance and technical skills on an instrument or by their voice. Students must be prepared to take part in public performances after college hours.

An audition may be necessary for entry to the course.

All work is internally assessed. The assessment methods include auditions, performances, recordings, compositions, presentations and portfolios of promotional materials.

The course aims to develop students’ practical skills and understanding of contemporary music performance and knowledge of the music industry. This will be supported by reflective evaluation of your own work.

Students can progress to study at university or gain employment within the events and music industry.

Past students have gone on to work at the BBC and study at various institutions including LIPA, University of Salford, University of Huddersfield, BIMM, Backstage Academy and Royal Northern College of Music.

I enjoy performing as it allows me to develop my confidence in my music and in everyday life.

I enjoy studying at Cowley because it provides a level of freedom and allows me to be independent in my studies but I still always feel like I can ask for help whenever I need it.
