An apprenticeship is a real job where you learn, gain experience and get paid. You’re an employee with a contract of employment and holiday leave. By the end of an apprenticeship, you’ll have the right skills and knowledge needed for your chosen career.
It can take between one and six years to complete an apprenticeship depending on which one you choose, what level it is and your previous experience. It’s funded from contributions made by the government and your employer.
The low-down on apprenticeships
We carried out a survey to ask parents what they thought about apprenticeships. Here’s what we found…
Almost 50% of parents told us that they believed apprenticeships were only for individuals who wanted to go into trade professions
1/4 of parents felt that their child’s school or college provided inadequate information about apprenticeships
Parents use the word “opportunities” as the most common word to describe apprenticeships
To find out what else parents thought, read our Parent’s View on Apprenticeships Guide.

The Army Officer Scholarship Scheme guarantees your child up to £10,000 in financial support, starting in Academic Year 13. It also guarantees your child a place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and a career as an Army Officer when your child finishes education.
Your child will receive £3,000 while they are in Year 13, then a Standard Bursary of £6,000 while they’re studying at university (£7,000 for a 4-year degree). Your child must have at least 40 ALIS points from GCSEs or 37 ALIS points from Scottish National Qualifications.
Army Scholars can apply to join any Corps for which they are eligible. Your child does not have to make a final decision about which Regiment or Corps they want to join until they’re at Sandhurst, unless they’re thinking about joining as a Professionally Qualified Officer, such as a Doctor, Dentist or Lawyer.
If your child is aged 16 or 17 they will need to apply online before March of Year 12. They will then attend the Army Scholarship board in June or July before they turn 18. This qualifies your child for a commission in the Army and allows your child to apply for additional bursaries.

Electrical Engineering Apprenticeships involve carrying out fault diagnosis and preventative maintenance on electrical equipment, such as motors, control units, PLCs, sensors, instrumentation, distribution systems and switchgear.
Design Apprenticeships are based on providing support for all areas of the engineering function. Typically apprentices will be involved in understanding problems in detail, developing solutions, working with CAD drawings and managing projects.
Process Manufacturing Apprenticeships involvesafely monitoring and controlling process lines, first-line diagnostics and maintenance of faults, and typically also include continuous improvement projects to raise cost/quality/safety/environmental performance. The Waterside apprenticeship programme also includes basic engineering training to provide a technical grounding before specializing in a particular industrial process.
